Acraman workshop and field trip August 4-9, 2006
The workshop and field trip:
A large asteroid impacted South Australia at roughly 570-580 Ma. The resulting ejecta has been recognized up to 500 km from the impact site (which is deeply eroded and remote and will not be visited during the field trip). There are large perturbations of the carbon isotope and acritarch records that seem to correlate with the impact, and there are other signals as well.
We will examine the ejecta blanket and its context in cores in Adelaide and in the field in the Flinders Ranges. We will be based at the Wilpena Pound Chalet in the picturesque southern Flinders Ranges, surrounded by classic Proterozoic and Cambrian sedimentary successions. We will take the opportunity of being in the area to demonstrate the GSSP of the Ediacaran Period, the first new period to have been added to the time scale since 1891.
In one and a half days of invited individual presentations speakers will provide an overview of past and present research, and explore research possibilities for the future. We will consider past research in the light of new knowledge and techniques, as well as presenting new research, of which there is a substantial amount. Particular emphasis will be placed on the context of the impact, including its palaeobiological and palaeoenvironmental aspects.
Registration
There is no registration. Breakfast and dinner is included in the price of rooms. There will be a small extracharges for lunches and morning and afternoon teas due to devolving costs to participants rather than charge a registration.
Program
Friday August 4: For those attending the Core Library visit - please make your way to the Core Library, 23 Conyngham Street, Glenside (phone 08 8379 9574) and meet at 2pm in reception.
