Matilda Thomas completed an Honours degree in Geology at Macquarie University in 2000. Her thesis research was on hyperspectral analysis of ancient hydrothermal deposits and application to Martian analogues, making her Australia's first astrobiology graduate. This work involved collaboration with CSIRO's Mineral Mapping Technology Group and examined hyperspectral mineral analysis techniques. She compared her field area, an ancient hydrothermal deposit in the Northern Flinders Ranges of South Australia, with possible Martian analogues. In 2001 Matilda was a research officer with the Australian Centre for Astrobiology (ACA) and also a tutor for Australia's first Astrobiology course, run by Professor Malcolm Walter. Matilda has also worked as a research assistant in the field of satellite communications and remote sensing for the "To Mars and Beyond" exhibition. She is currently working as a geologist with Geoscience Australia, researching hydrothermal fluid flow and ore-petrogenesis.
